Water Lily Pops are called "Phool Makhana" in India and are an extremely popular snack there. The product has been imported into other countries under different names: from "Popped Lotus Seeds" or "Phool Makhana" to "Foxnuts" and "Gorgon nuts". In addition, local farmers used to mistakenly translate the name of the planted flower into English as "lotus flower", which is also known as the national flower of India, out of ignorance.
This is why the first international brands also chose different name options. In 2021, we initially started with "Lotus Pops" as the product name for the launch.
Water Lily Pops - the path to finding the right name
Through feedback and further research after the market launch in 2021, we gathered a lot of feedback from our customers and also spoke to the regional farmers' association in India about the naming convention. The most common feedback was that lotus seeds basically do not pop under heat. Scientifically, our Water Lily Pops are based on the seeds of the prickly water lily (lat. Euryale ferox), while the lotus seeds belong to the Nelumbo Nucifera plant (lat.). Both plants look very similar, but have different nutritional profiles.
That's why we decided in 2023 to make our products known and market them under the name Water Lily Pops in Germany and Europe! Since then, you can enjoy our crispy & light snacks as real Water Lily Pops! The recipes with our 100% natural ingredients have not changed.
